A real decision
On Microsoft 365, and still chose Claude.
A commercial property firm of around 70 people runs on Microsoft 365 and had planned a paid Copilot rollout. Before buying, they chose Claude Team as the AI tool for their property management and sales teams, and kept Microsoft 365 for their email and files.
Being on Microsoft 365 doesn’t make Copilot the automatic answer. Look at the work your team actually does, then test your shortlist on it before you commit.
What to test before you commit
- The jobs that fill your team’s week, like emails, reports and long documents
- How well it works with the email and files you already use
- Who manages access, and what’s safe to put in
FAQ
Before you choose one for the whole team.
It depends on the work. In our experience, Claude is often the stronger fit for careful writing and for reading and comparing long documents. ChatGPT has a wide spread of everyday features and is the one most people have already tried. The business plans cost about the same, so try both on your team’s real work and pick the one people keep reaching for. The six questions above give you a starting point.
If your team lives in Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams, start by looking at Copilot. The paid licence works inside those apps and is connected to your work data. ChatGPT Business can also connect to Microsoft 365 and has extensions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, so it’s still worth testing if your team prefers it.
Not necessarily. Copilot Chat comes at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 business plans, but it mostly works from the web and the files you give it. The paid Copilot Business licence is AU$31.40 a person a month ex GST on a yearly plan, or AU$26.91 for the first year if you buy by 31 December 2026. It adds Copilot inside your apps and connects it to your work data. Many teams only pay for the people who need that.
Not by default on these business plans. Anthropic says there’s no model training on your content by default on Claude Team. OpenAI says there’s no training on your business data by default on ChatGPT Business. Microsoft says prompts, responses and data accessed through Microsoft Graph aren’t used to train its foundation models. It’s one of the main reasons to keep work on a business plan rather than personal accounts.
At the prices we checked, Claude Team is about A$340 a month on yearly billing, including GST. ChatGPT Business shows A$28 a person a month on OpenAI’s Australian pricing page, so about A$280. Copilot Business is AU$314 a month ex GST, or AU$269.10 in the first year under Microsoft’s current offer, on top of your Microsoft 365 plan. Prices change, so check with each vendor before you buy.
It depends on the tool and plan. Microsoft’s data residency commitments cover Copilot and Copilot Chat, so Microsoft 365 tenants based in Australia have that data stored in Australia. OpenAI offers Australian data residency for new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, not Business. Anthropic says Claude data is stored in the US. If this matters to your clients, confirm it with the vendor before you sign up.
If your team runs on Google Workspace, Google already includes Gemini in its Workspace business plans, starting with Gmail. Try it on real work before you pay for another tool. This page sticks to Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot.
You can, but one main tool for the whole team is easier to train, support and keep safe. A common setup is one main tool for everyone, with Copilot Chat available for quick questions inside Microsoft 365.
Who you’ll talk to
Hi, I’m Daniel.
I spent over ten years in financial services, eight of them advising clients and running operations at the same time. So I know what it’s like when the work clients pay for gets buried under everything around it.
Now I help founders and their teams work out where AI genuinely helps and get it working in everyday work. It’s how I run my own business too, so everything I recommend is something I use myself.
